Chapter 6
Tamara felt the wind in her hair, flowing through the tender locks and causing them to whip about her head. She sat on the passenger’s side of the truck, Buck between the two of them, his little leg in a tender cast and a funnel-shaped collar on his head. He was dopey from the medications but his tail wagged lazily and his eyes were on Jason, when they could stay open.
The creases in Jason’s brow were back, wearing little lines into his too handsome of a forehead. Buck had been at the vets for two days. It was two too many, Tamara could tell by the look in his eyes. That dog meant more to him than anything else in the world, she could tell by the way his hand stayed on the mutt’s back unless he was shifting gears.
“I don’t know how I am going to pay your Aunt back.” Jason’s voice was tense, like he really did owe her. Which was utter nonsense.
“She told you that it was taken care of, Jason.” Tamara heard her Aunt say it over and over at the vet’s.
The vet did it for a fraction of the price anyway, especially because Jason had helped to birth two of her calves this year. Jason was too proud to see that the people around him wanted to help him; that he meant that much to them. To the entire community. There was nothing that this man didn’t help with; he worked for the local churches when he had the time, helped any neighbor within ten miles and thought nothing of foaling a calf for someone. He just couldn’t see how much his help was worth.
There were a total of two bullets in the little mutt, both in the shoulder. Good thing too, because any further up and the bullets may very well have nicked an artery. He was a very lucky dog. Or someone knew exactly what they were doing. Either way, he was still there with them.
The surgery only took a few hours. Tamara had sat there with him as he rang his ball cap in-between his hands. And waited. When they finally were ushered off home with a positive prognosis, he took her back into his little cabin. Jason had pulled her into his room and just held her all night, his bare skin against hers while they dozed in and out of consciousness. They didn’t talk. They didn’t make love. They just held each other, silently. She didn’t think anything could rock Jason. She was wrong.
“I pay my debts.” Jason shifted gears again, the abrupt force shaking his body. His knuckles were white against the gear shift and she could tell by the tense actions that he was conflicted.
“Buck is an employee too. Doesn’t he deserve to have worker’s comp?” Tamara tried to be gentle about it, her voice soothing rather than argumentative or harsh.
She had him there. That dog did the same amount of work on the farm as any of Pamela’s.
